SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY

VNIGRI Scientific Library is one of the oldest Russian libraries in the oil and gas industry. It contains a lot of valuable specialized literature, collected since 1929. Total amount of scientific literature represents more than 90 thousand units in the field of petroleum geology, stratigraphy, paleontology, geochemistry and other related sciences.

The Library has a unique edition of the founders of domestic and foreign geological science, full sets of journals such as "Oil Industry" (since 1920), "The Bulletin of Moscow Society of Nature Explorers" (since 1983), "Prospect of Mineral Resources" (since 1931), "AAPG Bulletin" (since 1926), "Oil & Gas Journal" (since 1931), special dictionaries, reference books, encyclopedias, atlases and maps.

Printed scientific works of VNIGRI’s scientists (five thousand units since 1930) are especially valuable.

There is a search system in the library (system of directories and cards) containing more than 7 million cards of the Russian and foreign literature, including roster of authors – VNIGRI’s scientists.

RESEARCH FUNDS

Geological funds of VNIGRI contain more than 22 thousand units since 1929. They present theoretical and regional papers on petroleum geology, geochemistry, geophysics, paleontology, stratigraphy, hydrogeology, geomorphology, economics, petrography, petrophysics and other.

Diaries of geologists-pioneers, translations of foreign papers, pre-revolutionary archival data, papers of the period of Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) and latest developments of VNIGRI’s specialists are of great interest.

Currently, the program of database creation on computer media is developed and is being implemented for geological funds of VNIGRI.

MUSEUM OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY AND PALEONTOLOGY

Museum of petroleum geology and paleontology was established in 1947. Today it is the only Russian museum, which contains the nation's largest collection of geological and paleontological data from oil and gas areas, which large world significance. The museum has a unique collection of Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks, bitumen, oil, various floral and faunal fossils, represented by more than 50 000 samples, specimens and thin sections.

The basis of the geological section of the Museum is petrographic material from several outcrop and well sections of the former Soviet Union. Special place is occupied by a collection of outstanding scientists-theorists of petroleum geology, such as N.A. Kudryavtsev, N.B. Vassoevich, V.A. Uspensky, N.P. Tuaev, M.F. Dvali, etc. Important part of the Museum is paleontological section, founded by B.S. Sokolov, D.L. Stepanov, V.N. Ryabinin, M.S. Mesezhnikov, A.A. Saveliev, etc. The section contains all major groups of the Phanerozoic fossils.

The fund composition:

  •  Baltic oil and gas region - 54 units.
  • Moscow perspective oil-bearing area - 43 units.
  • Timan-Pechora oil and gas province - 65 units.
  • Volga-Ural oil and gas province - 127 units.
  • Pre-Caspian oil and gas province - 146 units.
  • North-Caucasus-Mangyshlak oil and gas province - 110 units.
  • Dnieper-Donetsk-Pripyat gas and oil province - 48 units.
  • West Siberian oil and gas province - 56 units.
  • Oil and gas provinces of Eastern Siberia - 88 units.
  •  Oil and gas provinces of the Far East - 72 units.

The museum has a comprehensive computerized information system «KAMIS», which will provide data on all museum collections.

VNIGRI periodically publishes directories containing information about collections of the museum. The Bulletin of palaeontological and lithological collections fund is published (since 2004).

CORE LIBRARY

Core Library contain standard geological and paleontological collections (about 400 units), processed and unprocessed collections of petrographic material, collected by VNIGRI’s specialists since the 30s of last century, from the Proterozoic to Phanerozoic sections of key wells, outcrops and well sections of several petroleum basins of Russia (Timan-Pechora, Volga-Urals, Pre-Caspian, West Siberian oil and gas provinces, East Siberian and Far East provinces) and the adjacent areas (Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Baltics, Caucasus, Central Asia, etc.).

The total number of units (samples) is more than 100 000
